Buying a house with damp walls: what to check

Damp walls are a common issue in older houses, stone buildings, basements, ground floors and properties built on moisture-prone ground. When water from the soil rises through the building materials, this is commonly known as rising damp.

Rising damp can cause visible marks at the bottom of walls, salt deposits, damaged plaster, peeling paint, musty smells and an uncomfortable feeling of moisture inside the home.

The ATE device has been designed to help treat rising damp in walls. It uses low-frequency electromagnetic technology to influence the behaviour of water present in the building materials and support the gradual drying of damp walls.

Unlike more invasive damp-proofing methods, the ATE device does not require heavy renovation work, chemical injections, repeated drilling or demolition. It is installed on a load-bearing wall and works continuously once connected.

The drying process is progressive. A damp wall cannot dry completely in just a few days, especially when moisture has been present for a long time. The thickness of the wall, the type of material, the initial moisture level, ventilation and existing wall coverings can all affect the time needed to see visible improvement.

The ATE device may be suitable for properties affected by damp walls at ground level, salt deposits, visible rising damp, older masonry, stone walls or situations where non-invasive treatment is preferred.

However, it is essential to identify the source of the damp problem first. The ATE device is designed for rising damp. It does not treat roof leaks, plumbing leaks, flooding, major lateral water ingress, façade defects or condensation caused only by poor ventilation.

The ATE range includes several models, such as ATE LC15, ATE LC30 and ATE MAX. The right model depends on the area to be covered, wall thickness, property layout and the severity of the damp problem.

Unsure which model to choose? Our HELP HUMIDITE website offers an online selection guide to help you choose the most suitable device for your home, its layout and the damp symptoms observed.
